Elliott Statement on 61st Anniversary of Medicare and Medicaid

Hamden, CT — Josh Elliott, Hamden state representative and Democratic candidate for governor, released the following statement on the 61st anniversary of the creation of Medicare and Medicaid:

“Every single Connecticut resident, no matter their zip code or economic status, deserves access to affordable healthcare. Greedy health insurance companies take advantage of people with a broken system, and the federal option that so many rely on is also at risk. Medicaid and Medicare were created sixty-one years ago to protect the health and financial security of vulnerable people. Yet federal interference has put at least 111,000 Connecticut residents — working parents, veterans, disabled residents, seniors — at risk of losing their coverage because of unfair work requirements. 

“As Governor, I am committed to fighting these cuts across the board. I’ll protect Medicaid as a core commitment, fight the cuts in court and publicly, and use every enrollment flexibility available so eligible residents never lose coverage. I’m not afraid to stand up to the Trump administration or the wealthiest in our state who hoard their resources. Connecticut is a wealthy state. The way we pay for it is by asking the people who got a $1.5 trillion federal tax break to pay their fair share at the state level.”
